Nature’s Medicine Chest

Debra Mastrianna

Long before we could run down to the local drugstore and purchase first aid items, we were harvesting natural remedies to heal our wounds and soothe our organs.  Those resources are still with us, but we have forgotten how powerful and valuable they are.

These are the basics that we should all have on hand for emergencies.  Stock up on Aloe Vera gel, witch hazel, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, pepper, Epsom salt and hydrogen peroxide, that can be used alone; or mixed with other natural ingredients to ease a host of everyday maladies. But there are many herbs that you should always have on hand, as well.  Here are a few essentials.

Arnica Flower Keep this one in your cabinet year round for to greatly reduced healing time of bruises, sore muscles and arthritic aches affected by seasonal changes, or any type of trauma.  Topically apply Arnica directly to affected area or mix with coconut, cbd, or other organic oil, right after an injury. Do not use internally or on open cuts.

Astragalus Root Take this antiviral herb twice a day to prevent or treat colds and flu and to boost immunity when you feel symptoms coming on.

Calendula Flower, aka Marigold flower Use calendula tincture to soothe chapped skin and lips, rashes and scalp conditions.  Mix a few drops with coconut oil and apply directly to the affected area, or add to your shampoo.

Chamomile Flower works well for upset stomachs, heartburn and indigestion and to promote relaxation. It is a calming herb that can help with teething, colic, illness or sleeplessness.

Kudzu Root taken before or after a celebration, can be used for hangovers and to help curb alcohol and tobacco cravings.  It can also help regulate heart rate and tame headaches, migraines, vertigo, tinnitus, blood sugar retinopathy, glaucoma and nerve deafness.

Mullein is incredibly soothing for sore throat and coughs.

Oil of Oregano has a very strong-taste, but can really boost the immune system and help fight off viruses quickly. If taken at the first sign of illness it can have a powerful effect on your recovery time. Oil of Oregano is available in oil or in capsules.

Peppermint is very soothing on an upset digestive system. The tincture can be used internally or externally for headache.

Plantain works well to minimize the effects of poison ivy, bites, stings, cuts, and infection. It can be taken internally or applied directly to the affected area.

Slippery Elm works well for sore or irritated throat for children or adults, or when you lose your voice.

Turmeric is an excellent source to soothe an irritated digestive system, inflammation and to detoxify your system.
