Stock Your Medicine Chest Naturally

Debra Mastrianna

Summer is fading, and as cooler weather approaches, it is the perfect time to inventory your medicine chest and make sure you have the right herbs you need to combat cold weather maladies. Here are some herbal essentials you may want to consider.

Arnica Flower (Arnica Montana) Use for arthritic aches affected by seasonal changes. Keep this one in your cabinet year-round to help stop pain and minimize bruising and edema. Rub the tincture directly on the area and take internally. Do not use on broken skin.

Astragalus Root (Astragalus membranaceus) Take this antiviral herb twice a day to prevent or treat colds and flu and to boost immunity.

Calendula flower, aka Marigold flower, (Calendula officinalis) Use calendula tinctures to soothe chapped skin and lips, rashes and scalp conditions.  Mix a few drops with coconut oil and apply directly to the affected area.

Chamomile Flower (Maticara recutita) This soothing herb works great as a dust-irritant reliever. It is also good for upset stomachs, heartburn and indigestion and to promote relaxation.

Echinacea Purpurea Root  naturally enhances the immune system to treat colds, flu, sore throat, and other common infections. This herb is best taken when a cold is coming on with the recommended dosage of three to four times a day.

Ginkgo Leaf (Ginkgo biloba) Use to combat low circulation or insufficient blood flow,
mental fuzziness, memory loss, or vertigo.

Ginseng
Root-Tienchi/Tian San Qi (Radix pseudo-ginseng)
relieves lethargy and fatigue and boosts resilience to environmental stresses. Take 2-3 times a day unless directed otherwise.

Kudzu Root (Pueraria lobata) Used for hangovers and helps alcohol and tobacco cravings, taken before and after the celebration.  Regulates heart rate, helps
tame headaches, migraines, vertigo, tinnitus, blood sugar retinopathy, glaucoma and nerve deafness.

KVA Formula (Formerly known as CVF) This is one of our all-time favorite formulas.  Inspired by Dr. John R. Christopher while at a seminar in Snowflake, Arizona to ward off Bubonic Plague.  Although there are a couple of herbs that are different, it is still made per Dr. Christopher’s instructions.  If you are even thinking about getting sick or know you are going to be around people who are, this is a must-have for the medicine cabinet] for old and young alike.

The flu can be confused with the common cold, but the flu symptoms are more severe than the typical sneezing and stuffiness of a cold. Symptoms can include fever, headache, chills, dizziness, muscle aches, sore throat, runny nose, ear pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting (mostly in children) and weakness.

This formula is useful for helping to prevent the spread of infection andprevent colds and other viral infections from developing.  And if they do manifest, it helps to aid in recovery and relieve the symptoms.

This formula has also been used for boosting the immune system and helps with long-term debilitating illnesses.

The ingredients in this powerhouse formula include, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar, Vegetable Glycerin, Honey, Wormwood Leaf, Marshmallow Root, White Oak BarkBlack Walnut Hulls, Mullein Leaf, Skullcap Leaf, Myrrh Gum, Fresh Garlic Bulb, Lobelia Leaf, Astragalus Root, Uva Ursi and Structured Water.

Fall and Winter are coming, but you can rest easy knowing that your medicine chest is stocked for the seasons; and whatever they may bring your way.
